A note on monopolistic workers' comp states
Four states require all employers to purchase workers' compensation through a single state-run fund: North Dakota, Ohio, Washington, and Wyoming. In those states, private workers' compensation insurance is not available. We can still place general liability, commercial auto, tools and equipment, bonds, and umbrella coverage with private carriers and help you coordinate the workers' comp side.
Texas is the only state where workers' comp is fully optional for private employers, including roofers. Operating as a non-subscriber strips most of the legal protections workers' comp normally provides — so most general contractors require you to carry it anyway, even though the state doesn't.
